Adidas T-Mac 3 "Blue Patent."
I got introduced to basketball in 2004 when as a family we went to Florida with mum's best friend. Her son Niall was the same age and not only introduced me to basketball but also Usher. These things go hand in hand and every evening we read the lyrics from the insert while listening to "Confessions." Niall was a Houston Rockets fan and being the unique individual that I am, the Houston Rockets were now my favourite team. I like whatever you like, just let me know so I can change my opinion. To quote Derry girls, "I'm not being an individual on my own." Niall bought the Houston Rockets jersey and printed his name on it. So, I followed suit, bought the jersey and printed my name on it too. To the extent that I copied him, it is odd I didn't print his name on the back.
Having saved money before the trip, I wanted to find shoes that no one would have at home and bought a pair of blue patent leather Adidas T-Mac 3's. You have to google these to know how much of a head-turner these are. Blue and patent leather... I definitely had the only pair in Ireland. I later found out my mum thought they were crazy but told me "If you like them... go for it." Sound like an individual now?
Months later we have a school trip to learn about stalactites and stalagmites. It is almost a right of passage in Ireland. This was an opportunity to show off my new shoes but if you ask me what people thought, I couldn't tell you because of my teacher.
I wore a thick, mesh, baby blue McKenzie basketball jersey with embroidered letters, some navy nylon tracksuit bottoms, that made a lot of noise and the patent leather TMAC 3's. I know, amazing.
As the caves are dark, lunch was my moment to show off. Timed perfectly, I dropped the trash in the bin and do a flawless slow-mo Usher spin. "Watch out, my outfit's ridiculous." Stunned silence, envy, awe, all at once. And then, my teacher heartlessly says "Shane, what are those on your feet? Wellington boots?" Wounded, I retreated. Still wounded, I retell this story.
So the stamp is me, in my full blue fit, feeling blue and the water bouncing off my "wellington boots."
