Nike x Tom Sachs
Tom Sachs is an Artist, known for building modern icons using everyday materials. He is fascinated with space and in particular, the Apollo program of the 1960s and 70s. Sachs’ obsession with space was realized in the building of his own “Space Program” in 2007, and he went all out. For this Sach's reconstructed a huge lunar module at a scale (1:18), which as a reader doesn't mean much so you'll need to check out his website! It came complete with everything two astronauts would need for a full mission and some extras like a bar and a DJ area. Artistic license. Inside the Space program, he and his team built a fully functioning control mission control unit which chronologically plays a video of the rituals astronauts go through. From suiting up, to the launch pad, viewers could watch a timeline of a mission.
In the Space Program, Sachs questioned: “What kind of shoe would an Astronaut wear?”“Nike, we have a project.” In 2012 The first NIKECraft collection was designed with functionality in mind for space exploration. It involved apparel, footwear (Mars Yard 1.0) and accessories, made from car airbags, mainsails for boats and the spacesuit itself. It was said that the shoes were fragile, wonder how sneakerheads knew if they just kept them in a box. So, Sach's wore them for 5 years to test and improve them so that we could have Mars Yard 2.0 in 2017.
